Download enhancements

On top of Chromium downloads, Turbo adds parallel acceleration, detection of 9 third-party download tools, in-page confirm download, downloads-page management, and one-click quick-save for page images.

Supports Windows and macOS (some downloaders are Windows-only — see the table). Settings live under Settings → Downloads (or chrome://settings/downloads); the downloads page is chrome://downloads (or Ctrl+J / macOS Cmd+Shift+J).

How to turn on

1. Open Settings → Downloads (or chrome://settings/downloads).
2. Enable parallel download acceleration, choose a download tool, and configure Ask where to save each file before downloading, Watch clipboard, Alt quick-save, and related options as needed.
3. Manage tasks on the downloads page (menu → Downloads, or the toolbar Downloads button).

Parallel download acceleration

In Settings → Downloads, confirm Enable parallel download acceleration (on by default).

• Can speed up large-file downloads significantly
• If a site misbehaves (failed download, checksum issues, etc.), turn it off temporarily and retry

Download tool (detects 9)

The Download tool setting on the same page chooses who handles new downloads. Besides the built-in browser, Turbo detects 9 third-party downloaders (shown only when installed).

Hand web links to the downloader you already use — keep its multi-thread, resume, and queue features; no matching browser extension required, and no need to copy links. The confirm dialog can launch a tool once without changing the default; if nothing is installed or you prefer not to use one, downloads stay in the browser.

If the selected app is missing or handoff fails, Turbo falls back to the browser with a toast so the task does not fail silently.

Not handed to third-party tools

• Right-click Save as — still downloads in the browser
• Extension packages (.crx) — still install in the browser

Confirm download (in-page dialog)

With Settings → Downloads → Ask where to save each file before downloading on, downloads open Turbo’s confirm download dialog (not the system Save as dialog):

• Edit filename and save path; the “Download to” path is editable (validated as an absolute existing folder)
• Pick a recent folder or Browse
• Download and open: secondary button; saves then opens; New download can also open when done
• Open only (temporary): secondary button saves to a temp folder and opens; cleaned up later; preference is remembered; also appears on the downloads page
• Dialog side buttons launch an installed third-party tool (with icons; only detected apps). One click affects this download only and does not change the default tool
• Copy download link beside the URL (disabled for empty/invalid URLs)
• Non-modal: keeps the page usable
• Name conflicts: asking to overwrite after a manual rename; uniquify if you did not rename
• Illegal / reserved names are blocked per platform rules

Clipboard watch and New download

• Watch clipboard (off by default) — when enabled under Settings → Downloads, copying a download link opens the confirm dialog
• New download prefills the clipboard URL when present

Downloads page

Open the downloads page (chrome://downloads, menu → Downloads, or Ctrl+J):

• Filter by type on the left: All, PDF, Documents, Applications, Images, Archives, Video, Audio, Other
• Delete file: removes the local file and the download record
• In progress — pause / resume / cancel
• Completed — shows size; hover to delete; click the row to open
• Failed / interrupted — Retry
• Hover a row for Copy download link (also for failed, interrupted, and canceled)

The full page toolbar has New download, sharing the confirm-dialog flow with the bubble.

Click the toolbar Downloads button: New download, Clear all (empty panel remains), and overflow menu links to the full page / download settings. Right-click the Downloads button opens the downloads page.

Under Settings → Downloads you can also enable: show downloads when complete, and a completion sound (both off by default; sound can be previewed).

More bubble details

Successful downloads increment a badge (cap 99+; in-progress not counted); unread items are styled differently; focus lands in the panel for immediate search. If an extension may take over a download, the bubble and Save-as confirm wait for it; if cancel happens after the dialog is up, the dialog closes.

Alt + left-click quick-save images

Hold Alt (macOS Option) and left-click an image on the page to save it to a chosen folder.

• Toggle and set the folder under Settings → Downloads
• Separately control: Show in download list (off by default), Show toast (on by default), and thumbnail fly-in animation when toast is on (on by default; animation does not play if toast is off)
• Continuous saves use a clearer toast; same-name files are not overwritten
• Coach mark: light tip on image hover (~5s; up to 3 times; stops after a successful save)
• With the feature on, Alt + right-click opens system Save as for a one-off rename or folder
• If network/server save fails, falls back to the decoded JPEG / PNG / WebP already in the page

Notes and limits

• Third-party tools must be installed — the settings list and confirm shortcuts only show detected apps; uninstalling removes them from the UI
• Default vs one-shot — Settings → Download tool is the default; confirm-dialog icons only affect the current download
• Save as and extensions — right-click Save as and .crx packages always use the browser
• Video download — see Video hover toolbar; separate from this Download tool setting
